Pet food is increasingly mirroring human nutrition standards, creating strong demand for scientifically validated ingredients like biotics and omega-3 fatty acids. Owners now treat their pets’ diets with the same scrutiny they apply to their own, seeking transparent sourcing, measurable health benefits, and premium-quality components. This evolution is prompting major players—including dsm-firmenich, Beneo, ADM, and AstaReal—to accelerate innovation in pet nutrition. The convergence between human and pet nutrition is particularly evident in functional ingredients, where suppliers are leveraging the same scientifically backed solutions for both markets.

“As pets are increasingly seen as family members, owners expect the same standards they apply to their own diets, such as high-quality nutrition, transparency, and strong scientific validation,” says Rishabh Pande, global vice president of Pet Food at dsm-firmenich. This shift prioritizes high-quality inputs, straightforward labeling, and ingredients that support gut health, immunity, and longevity—mirroring expectations in human wellness markets. Pande emphasizes that this alignment is driving demand for ingredients that combine functional benefits with sensory superiority, ensuring pets not only receive nutritional advantages but also enjoy their food.

The industry is responding by incorporating ingredients already established in human nutrition, such as prebiotics, probiotics, postbiotics, and omega-3 fatty acids. Postbiotics, in particular, are gaining popularity. Unlike live probiotics, they remain stable through processing while still delivering gut health and immune system benefits. Pande acknowledges that research in this area is still developing, but their processing resilience makes them well-suited for pet food applications. He notes that growing evidence suggests postbiotics may also support overall well-being in pets, further bridging the gap between human and pet nutrition.

Omega-3s and sustainable sources

Omega-3 fatty acids—especially eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA)—represent another rapidly expanding category. Research connects these compounds to improved brain development, healthier skin and coats, and reduced inflammation in pets. However, traditional fish oil sources face sustainability challenges, driving interest in algal-based alternatives that provide the same nutritional advantages with a smaller environmental impact. Pande highlights that tailored micronutrient premixes are becoming essential to deliver precise nutrient profiles while maintaining stability during processing and ensuring consistent performance at scale.

Consumer behavior is the primary driver of these changes. According to Beneo’s 2025 Consumer Research on Pet Care, over 80% of dog and cat owners now expect pet food to meet the same quality benchmarks as human food. Dr. Maygane Ronsmans, Beneo’s product manager for Animal Nutrition, observes that pet owners increasingly seek functional ingredients beyond basic nutrition. Data from ADM’s 2025 Outside Voice Global Lifestyle Survey reveals that 77% of global pet owners are willing to pay more for enhanced formulations, while 84% prioritize products that may contribute to their pets’ longevity. Beneo’s research further highlights that most owners consider the quality of ingredients and the nutritional value very important factors in purchasing decisions.

Gut health has become a central focus in pet nutrition innovation. Pande notes that new formulations increasingly target microbiome balance and immune system resilience. Meanwhile, the concept of personalized nutrition is emerging as a key frontier. Ronsmans highlights ingredients like isomaltulose, a slow-digesting carbohydrate derived from sugar beets that helps regulate blood sugar, a growing concern as pet obesity rates climb. When combined with chicory prebiotics, the result is dual benefits: stable glucose levels and improved gut microbiota health. She notes that such integrated approaches are becoming critical as pet owners increasingly seek solutions that address both metabolic and digestive well-being.

Science gaps and regulatory hurdles

Despite progress, significant hurdles remain. Clinical evidence in pets remains limited compared to human research, according to Dr. Behnaz Shakersain of AstaReal. Most studies rely on human or rodent data, even though metabolic differences between species are substantial. Validated veterinary biomarkers, particularly for areas like cognitive function or gut integrity, are still in short supply. Regulatory inconsistencies further complicate matters, as brands must adapt to varying global standards.

Sustainability presents another critical challenge. Rising food security concerns may increasingly divert traditional pet food ingredients toward human consumption. Manufacturers will need to develop alternative protein sources, such as fermentation-derived single-cell proteins—also called “smart proteins”, or adopt more sustainable omega-3 suppliers. Ronsmans predicts this shift will push the industry toward solutions that optimize resource use while benefiting both animals and the environment. She notes that sustainability is now a mainstream purchase driver, with over half of pet owners preferring eco-friendly products and traceable sourcing strongly correlating with trust.

Colton Clason, senior marketing manager of Pet Nutrition, B2B, at ADM, predicts that scientifically validated functionality will remain a central driver of purchasing decisions in the years ahead as consumers deepen their focus on pet wellness.

Premium growth in emerging markets

Growth opportunities exist in emerging markets, where urbanization and rising incomes are fueling demand for premium pet nutrition. Pande highlights that while pet ownership is growing rapidly in these regions, premium nutrition categories are still developing. As disposable incomes rise, demand for science-backed functional ingredients is expected to accelerate.

Another promising area is life-stage and condition-specific nutrition. While products exist for puppies, kittens, and senior pets, there remains significant potential for more precise nutritional solutions targeting areas such as cognitive aging, metabolic health, or immune resilience, which can be more prevalent in specific life stages or breeds.
