Health Canada approves yeast-derived beta-glucan and resveratrol - beta glucan

Lallemand Bio-Ingredients has welcomed updates to Health Canada’s Natural Health Product Monographs, which now recognize Saccharomyces cerevisiae (brewer’s yeast) as a source of trans-resveratrol and yeast beta-glucan. The company calls this a “milestone” for fermentation-derived health ingredients.

These changes, according to the company, offer a clearer path for manufacturers to licence natural health products containing these ingredients in Canada. Nassim Naderi, a regulatory affairs specialist at Lallemand Bio-Ingredients, stated, “Fermentation has been safely used for centuries, and today it continues to unlock exciting opportunities for innovation in nutrition and health.”

The updated monograph includes health claims for yeast beta-glucan, such as its immunomodulating properties and its ability to reduce the severity of common cold symptoms in adults prone to recurrent colds.

The updates also allow fermentation-derived trans-resveratrol from S. cerevisiae to be licensed under Health Canada’s existing Antioxidant Monograph framework, including established antioxidant claims and conditions of use.

This recognition reflects a growing body of scientific evidence supporting the use of yeast-derived bioactives. Naderi added, “This development represents an important step forward not only for fermentation-derived ingredients, but for the broader health and wellness industry.”

Its products, such as Veri-te and M-Gard, are examples of ingredients derived from S. cerevisiae, addressing the demand for healthy aging and immune support.

The firm’s recent approval for its Gastro-AD postbiotic further highlights its commitment to innovative solutions. This product, made from non-GMO soy fermented with Lactobacillus delbrueckii R0187, is designed to relieve symptoms associated with functional dyspepsia.

The updates to Health Canada’s monographs not only validate the potential of yeast-derived ingredients but also streamline the process for manufacturers, supporting a more efficient pathway for bringing these products to market. This development is particularly significant as it aligns with the growing consumer interest in natural, science-backed health solutions.

As the health and wellness industry continues to evolve, the recognition of fermentation-derived ingredients like yeast beta-glucan and trans-resveratrol marks a notable advancement. This highlights the industry’s shift towards innovative, scientifically supported products that meet the changing needs of consumers.

With these regulatory updates, Lallemand Bio-Ingredients is well-positioned to continue its mission of delivering cutting-edge, science-backed solutions. The company’s focus on fermentation-derived ingredients not only aligns with historical practices but also points to a future where biotechnology plays a central role in health and nutrition.
