
A new study in the journal Neurology links three environmental factors to a higher risk of migraine headaches, particularly as temperatures rise during the late spring and summer months.
Researchers followed 7,032 people with migraines in Israel for about a decade, tracking their daily exposure to air pollution and weather conditions. They compared this data to hospital visits and clinic appointments over the same period. During the study, 32% of participants had at least one visit to a healthcare provider for a migraine. They also found that 47% of participants used triptan medications, a fast-acting prescription drug, at some point, with many using at least two tablets a month.
The analysis revealed a clear correlation between specific weather patterns and these medical visits. Higher levels of air pollution were associated with the most migraine-related hospital visits. Short-term exposure to high levels of nitrogen dioxide, a pollutant often found in traffic exhaust, increased the risk of a clinic visit by 41%. High temperatures and low humidity also appeared to amplify the effects of pollution, making them more dangerous triggers.

Another significant factor was ultraviolet (UV) exposure. People exposed to high levels of UV rays were 23% more likely to seek medical help for migraine symptoms compared to those who were not. While the study did not prove that these factors cause migraines, it did establish a link between them.
Doctors explain that pollution can spark neuroinflammation, an immune response in the brain and spinal cord. This inflammation may cause the release of pain chemicals like calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) and substance P, which can lead to a migraine. The immune system might also react to pollution as an allergen, triggering headaches in sensitive individuals.
Heat affects blood vessels and nerves by causing them to expand, which can irritate nerves in tight spaces. This expansion, combined with the dehydration that often comes with high temperatures, creates a volatile environment for migraine sufferers. High humidity can complicate matters by causing dehydration and sweating, which reduces blood volume and constricts blood vessels. This physical stress on the vascular system can trigger pain signals.

It is worth noting that these environmental factors are just one piece of a complex puzzle. The US National Library of Medicine lists common triggers like stress, hormonal changes, bright lights, loud noises, and strong smells. Dietary factors such as alcohol, aged cheeses, and MSG also play a significant role for many patients. Because triggers are personal, experts recommend keeping a headache diary to identify individual patterns.
Despite the difficulty of avoiding environmental factors like pollution and heat, doctors suggest practical steps to mitigate risk. If pollution levels are high, wearing an N95 face mask outdoors and keeping windows closed while running an air purifier indoors can help. When dealing with heat and humidity, maintaining hydration is essential. Patients are advised to drink water and replenish electrolytes to keep blood vessel function stable.
